Hi, and thanks for the brave question.
I have 10 years experience working in the corporate world for small to larger companies as a consultant. I would like to share ways I manage working in the corporate world which I hope help you:
Warmer Emails
Warmer emails get a better reaction and faster response. I used to write cold and demanding emails without emotion. People would then take a long time to email back, or when they do reply, I would get a cold email in return.
When I put more effort into my emails, I’ve noticed people are much happier to respond. I think of how I would feel receiving my own email.
Maybe you could try writing a warmer email, if you haven’t already?
Here are some tips:
- Genuine – writing with warmth
- Clear and simple
- Less is more – use less words so it is easy to read
Exercise
The corporate world can be exhausting. Moving the body is best and gets the blood flowing. I go to the gym and workout in the mornings. I always feel better after. If I don’t have much time I go for a 10-minute walk before work. This way I’m not tense going into the office.
5 Minute Meditation
In the afternoon when I feel tired or overwhelmed, I go into a room and meditate for 5 minutes. I close my eyes and breathe. I follow a method of letting go of negative emotions. It is amazing how 5 minutes of meditation can clear the mind. I come back to my desk with clarity.
Consistency
Meditation gave me discipline to “push-through” when I’m feeling tired or want to give up and go home. In the past, I was lazy and would slack-off waiting until home time (I did this for 15 years of my working life).
I spend an extra 10 minutes at the end of the day to complete my task. When I leave the office, I feel better knowing my work is done.
When I go to work the next day, and I am no longer on the back-foot and can start fresh. I have been applying this consistency most days, which has made a huge difference to my productivity. Because the stress doesn’t build up as much, work is more enjoyable.
Acceptance
Meditation is helping me accept my managers and co-workers. I used to think other people were the cause of my unhappiness. I realized others were not the problem and myself was the problem.
Through meditation, I am looking at myself who judges co-workers, managers, clients and I am letting go of these thoughts I created. This has allowed me to accept where I am and find happiness inside me.
